Traveling while pumping can feel stressful—but you have options. If you’re bringing breast milk through airport security in the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows you to carry it with you.
Here’s what to know before you head to the airport so you can move through security with confidence.
TSA guidelines for breast milk
No quantity limits
You can bring breast milk, formula, or juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces (100 ml) in your carry-on bag. These liquids do not need to fit in a quart-sized bag.
You do not need to travel with your child
You’re allowed to travel with breast milk even if your child is not with you.
Ice packs and cooling materials
TSA agents may inspect cooling accessories and have the right to discard partially frozen gel or ice packs. Maven Milk Kit packs are made of foam, which makes them TSA-friendly.
Please note: TSA agents have the right to inspect any carry-on items.
Tips for a smooth TSA screening experience
To help make the process easier, follow these steps at the security checkpoint:
1. Declare your items early
At the start of the screening process, tell the TSA officer that you’re carrying breast milk, formula, or juice in excess of 3.4 ounces in your carry-on bag.
2. Remove items for separate screening
Take these liquids out of your bag so they can be screened separately from the rest of your belongings. They are typically screened by X-ray.
3. Allow additional inspection if needed
If requested, allow the TSA agent to inspect your items. This is a standard part of the security process.
